Back Story

The Death on the Nile is a detective story by British writer Agatha Christie, initially published in England on 1 November 1937 by the Collins Crime Club.

Story Synopsis of Death On The Nile

Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot’s Egyptian vacation on a glamorous river steamer turns into a terrifying killer hunt when the perfect couple’s honeymoon is tragically cut short. Set in an epic landscape of sprawling desert landscapes and the majestic Pyramids of Giza, this tale of unbridled passion and heartbreaking jealousy features well-dressed cosmopolitan travelers and twists. It turns that are sinister enough to keep viewers guessing to a shocking ending. There is no information about the Death on the Nile box office collection.

Is the Movie Death on the Nile Any Good?

Branagh’s second adaptation of Agatha Christie is like Hercule Poirot’s stunning mustache: historic, eccentric, and eclectic. But it’s not for a younger audience. Even though Branagh tries to bring Poirot down to earth by providing a detective background to explain his incredible facial hair (and why there’s no Madame Poirot), the teenager may find no connection to the picky narcissistic detective. Furthermore, the dialogue suggests the viewer understand topics that may have been familiar in 1937, such as being pro-Communist, what is a dowry, and why the entire wedding party accompanies the newlyweds on their honeymoon. That’s a reasonable price for a conversation starter that might make Death on the Nile a better choice for families to watch than a slumber party.

On the other hand, Death on the Nile can help solve the puzzle of how to get kids more interested in geography and/or world history. Phenomenal Egyptian landscapes are shown in sharp cinematography. The scenes featuring the Pyramids of Giza and the Temple of Abu Simbel are stunning, memorable, and captivating. Seeing the characters interact with these landmarks can stimulate children’s curiosity about the locations. For those who are already familiar with this particular story, several changes are made to Christie’s novel to provide a new perspective: it reduces the number of murder suspects. It is intentionally made more diverse than the source material. But not necessarily better. Like Poirot’s make-up, this version is only different.

Death on the Nile Movie Suspense Breaker

As in many of Christie’s adaptations (this one by Michael Green), the ragtag crew awaits their charge on board. Former comedy duo Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French reunite as Lynette’s godmother and companion. Sophie Okonedo and Letitia Wright play Salome, a blues singer, and her enterprising daughter (a beautiful reinterpretation of Angela Lansbury’s Salome, a saucy, erotic novelist in 1978). Moreover, there’s also Annette Bening, criminally underused as an artist, and Russell Brand as a pathetic doctor.

But the supporting cast remains sparse, except Okonedo, Mackie, and Thomas Bateman as Poirot’s vague friend, Wodehusian’s friend. Poirot circled around, like a rotating camera, before performing a satisfying three-axis curved explanation in front of the suspects. Branagh’s Poirot often lacks personality, and the film’s intensely smoldering epilogue exudes more mood than anything else combined. Moreover, Death on the Nile movie is a must-watch for thriller and suspense movie lovers.
